List Essay Prompt
On Difference: PCW Fall 2009
Katie Livingston

One of the ways writers can get ideas is by making a list. In class, we read Jamaica Kincaid’s essay, Girl, which is a list of do’s and don’ts, an outline of the expectations and rules she was taught about being a girl. It begins, “Wash the white clothes on Monday and put them on the stone heap; wash the color clothes on Tuesday and put them on the clothesline to dry; don’t walk barehead in the hot sun…”

Mimicking Kincaid’s style, write your own list essay about the things you’ve heard or been taught about gender and sexuality. In other words, finish the following: Women should… Women should not… or Men should… Men should not. These might be rules or expectations you learned from your family, formal education, religion, politics, the media, your experiences, and so on. When we make zines, you might choose your favorites and remix them into zine pages.
